Conventional 3D printers employ 3-axis control type Numerical Control which might have trouble with undercutting during the printing process. The 5-axis printer on the other hand can tilt and rotate the object in addition to the freedom of movement in X, Y and Z axes; thus giving it a total of 5 dimensions that can be traversed.

The 5-axis 3D printer is capable of not only planar lamination but also 5- axis lamination as opposed to conventional printers which are capable of only the former. This could help the new 3D printer to make more intricate parts.

The printer seems so sophisticated; it might have high operating costs right? Wrong. Conventional 3D printers print out a supporting material before printing spherical or curvy objects on it so as to prevent the object from sagging down. The 5-axis printer can hold the object without printing any supporting material, thus reducing the material and operating costs.

Lamination and cutting are done on separate machines during conventional 3D printing. But 5 axis printer can carry out these tasks continuously on the same machine; thus reducing the operating time and effort.
