Nanotechnology has been making the rounds in industries well before 3D printing and is hailed revolutionary by many. Apparels and fabrics are just one among the industries hugely benefitted from both nanotechnology and 3D printing. With enormous possibilities of nanotechnology in vision, Nano Dimension has printed a ‘smart fabric’.Nano Dimension has successfully printed electronics into the ‘smart fabric’ 3D prints, well scratch that, the fabric in itself is an array of silver conductors, elastic enough to be used as fabric. Nano Dimension Technologies Ltd. Claims the fabric can be folded, resistant to wear and tear and obviously, wearable.

The fabric was printed using Nano Dimension’s patented AgCite™ Silver Nanoparticle conductive ink, capable of being 3D printing as electronics into fabrics and the DragonFly 2020 3D Printer series capable of 3D printing the same into thin sheets. The ink is being improved for future ventures and commercial production. The DragonFly 2020 3D Printer is capable of printing an entire circuit board or a part of it.  ‘Smart fabric’ is the brainchild of Nano Dimension and a leading wardrobe manufacturer, but the details of the latter are not yet revealed. Figures hint that the deal could be originally made by the wardrobe manufacturer to enter the ‘smart textiles’ market which is expected to touch around $5 billion by 2020.

Nanotechnology has found vast applications in 3D printing, especially in the printed circuit board (PCB) industry. Nano dimension claims it’s developing a PCB 3D printer and conductive, dielectric inks for PCB professionals. With nanotechnology making breakthroughs in the fabric industry combined with the flexibility of 3D printing manufacturing, super-suits are just on the horizon.
